A resolution committing the Dioceses of Eau Claire, Fond du Lac, and Milwaukee to take a final vote on reunion during Eastertide 2024 passed comfortably today at each of the dioceses’ annual conventions.
The resolution, proposed by the Trialogue Steering Committee, requires a joint agreement of union to be finalized and distributed to the governance bodies of each diocese by mid-February, and to the people of the dioceses by mid-March. The form of a joint agreement of union is outlined in the Episcopal Church’s Canon I.10.6.
Eau Claire voted 91.5 percent in favor of the resolution, and Milwaukee voted 92 percent in favor. The Diocese of Fond du Lac held a roll call vote in which 61.2 percent of the lay delegates and 76 percent of clergy voted yes.
As defined in the resolution, the joint agreement of union “shall set forth the assessment structure of the new Diocese, population of governance bodies of the new Diocese, in addition to all agreements concerning reunification as addressed in Canon I.10.6, and such other matters as may be necessary or proper.”
Each diocesan convention met on the same day in different locations. The Diocese of Eau Claire voted first, followed several hours later by the Diocese of Fond du Lac and, shortly thereafter, the Diocese of Milwaukee.
The final vote on reunion will take place next year at a special joint convention in late April or early May. If reunion is approved, the dioceses will ask for the consent of both houses of General Convention in June.
A date and location for the special joint convention will be announced in the coming days.
