An UPDATED message about Providing Dinner for Beacon House from Director, Scott Wuerch
A message sent to all organizations who provide dinner from Scott Wuerch, Director of the Beacon House,
Most respected volunteer coordinators.
It’s amazing what you learn when you talk directly to the source. After being told that we could not cook in the kitchen due to Health Department rules…
I need to retract my statement from an earlier email to the group. In talking with the Health Department, whom I was told was the source of our “can’t use the kitchen for cooking” edict, it turns out the Health Department says that we have a pass from the state requirement to meet commercial kitchen standards. We can’t do heavy duty cooking in there, but we CAN indeed warm up cold food. The only thing I am going to ask, if your team is going to provide cold food that needs to be heated prior to being served we will need to also have a volunteer (could be the person bringing the food) to supervise the cooking and clean-up of the cooking. We are just not staffed with the number of people we would need to both cook and supervise the shelter.
So, I take back what I’ve said earlier…you can indeed warm up food or boil fresh vegies. Due to size and other restrictions, (like staffing of the shelter) we do not have the ability to cook an entire meal in the shelter kitchen.
BTW thanks to the groups who are choosing to stay and serve and enjoy a meal with our guests. Our guests have commented multiple time about how much they like the teams staying and talking/eating with them.
Thank you for all that you do for us here at the Beacon House. We could not be us, without all of you!
I wanted to start by saying that we could not shelter 30+ families per year if it was not for all of you! I am always humbled by the response of this group, and I can’t say thank you enough!
